What is a vape tank?

The vape tank is the part of your mod or e-cigarette that holds the vape juice, as well as the coil that turns the liquid into vapour. You’ll see that in most devices, the tank is positioned on top of the battery, typically cylindrical in shape with a glass body and a metallic top and bottom.

A stem runs up through the middle of the tank that attaches to the coil and leads up to the mouthpiece. When you start vaping, the coil will heat up and the liquid in the wick will vaporise, with the tank replenishing the wick with vape juice until it runs out and needs to be refilled.

How does a vape tank work?

Vape tanks are one of the most essential components of your device, designed to store and heat your vape juice to create vapour for you to inhale and exhale. Each tank comes with a tip or mouthpiece that you can inhale from in order to draw the vapour in.

You’ll see that there’s a coil contained inside the vape tank. This coil is what heats the vape juice once you’ve filled the tank. This coil is made from a piece of wound metal, converting the battery power in the vape pen into heat.

The coil also features an absorbent wick (usually made from cotton), which soaks up the vape juice and provides a steady flow for the coil to heat so you can vape merrily away.

What are the main components of a vape tank?

The majority of vape tanks are made up of the base and coil, the glass tank itself, a top cap and a drip tip or mouthpiece. The drip tip (which is usually removable) allows you to inhale vapour, while you use the top cap to seal the vape tank off. O-rings are used to prevent the vape juice from leaking between the different component parts, and these will need to be replaced if you start to notice leakage becoming problematic.

The coil, meanwhile, is made up of cotton and a metal wire, turning your vape juice into vapour for you to savour and enjoy. This is situated on contact points within the base of the tank. You may also see an airflow ring in the base of the tank, allowing you to tailor how much air flows into the tank and how much vapour is produced as a result.

How do I fill the e-liquid in a vape tank?

It can be a little daunting to refill your vape tank if you’ve never done it before, but it’s very easy, and you’ll be quick to pick it up. There are top fill and bottom fill vape tanks so it’s important to know which one you have but once you work this out, you’ll be ready to rock and roll.

Just remove the tank from the battery and either unscrew the top or the base, depending on the type of tank you have. Find the fill hole and position the tip of your vape juice bottle into it. Tilt the tank slightly to prevent air pockets, then squeeze your juice into the tank, leaving an air bubble at the top. Put the vape kit back together, give it a quick wipe to clean it and away you go.

Vape Tanks FAQ

How to empty and clean a vape tank?

To clean, disassemble the tank, empty any remaining e-liquid, wash the components with warm water, let them dry thoroughly, and reassemble before refilling with a new e-liquid flavour.

Why is my vape juice turning dark in the tank?

E-liquid darkening occurs due to heat, exposure to air, and the caramelization of sweeteners and flavourings in vape juices, which is a natural process and doesn’t necessarily indicate spoilage.

Why is my vape tank leaking from the bottom?

Leaks often happen from improper sealing, worn-out or incorrectly placed O-rings (rubber seals), broken tanks, or coil flooding, allowing the e-liquid to seep through the airflow holes.

Are vape tanks suitable for beginners?

Vape tanks can be suitable for beginners due to their simplicity and ease of use, offering a straightforward setup that’s user-friendly for those new to vaping. The key components are the tank and coils, which can be easy to manage.

What are the different coil options available for a vape tank?

Vape tanks typically offer various coil types, such as sub-ohm coils below 1 ohm for direct lung vaping, higher-resistance coils for mouth-to-lung vaping, and temperature control coils for specific temperature-regulated vaping.

How often do I need to replace the coil in a vape tank?

Coil replacement frequency varies based on usage, but a general guideline suggests changing coils every 1-2 weeks for optimal flavour and vapour production. Or when you start tasting a reduction in flavour, a burnt taste, and a reduction in vapour.

Are there any specific maintenance requirements for a vape tank?

Regular maintenance involves cleaning the tank components, checking and replacing O-rings when worn, and priming new coils to ensure their longevity and the tank’s proper functioning.
