What are e-liquid concentrates?

E-liquid concentrates are used to provide flavours in e-liquids. The main ingredient is made with 100% Propylene Glycol. Concentrates tend to have a PG base, which acts as the flavour carrier when mixing e-liquids. Concentrates give you the flavouring mixtures of your favourite vape juices.

How are e-liquid concentrates made?

  1. Flavouring Ingredients: e-liquid concentrates are primarily made from food-grade flavouring ingredients. These flavourings can include natural and artificial flavour compounds. The specific flavour ingredients are carefully selected to recreate the desired taste profile, such as fruit, dessert, beverage, or tobacco flavours.
  2. Dilution: E-liquid concentrates are highly concentrated to ensure that they provide a strong and distinct flavour when diluted and mixed with other base ingredients.
  3. Quality Control: Manufacturers of e-liquid concentrates follow strict quality control processes to ensure the safety and consistency of their products. This includes testing for purity, quality, and safety to ensure that the concentrates do not contain harmful contaminants.

It’s important to note that making e-liquids with concentrates requires a good understanding of the ingredients, their proportions, and safety considerations.

How do you make your own e-liquids?

If you are interested in making your own e-liquids at home, there will be some basic information you will need to know. Before you even start, it’s essential to approach this with caution, as working with nicotine and e-liquid ingredients requires careful handling and adherence to safety guidelines. Here’s a basic overview of how to make your e-liquids:

Ingredients and equipment:

E-Liquid Base:

  • Propylene Glycol (PG): Commonly used for carrying flavour and providing throat hit.
  • Vegetable Glycerin (VG): Used for vapour production and smoothness.

Nicotine (Optional):

  • Nicotine is an optional ingredient, and you can choose the strength (e.g., 3mg, 6mg, etc.) based on your preference.

E-Liquid Concentrates:

  • Flavour concentrates are available in a wide range of flavours and are used to create the desired taste.

Bottles and Containers:

  • You’ll need bottles or containers to store your e-liquids.

Safety Gear:

  • Disposable gloves
  • Safety goggles or glasses
  • Protective clothing to prevent skin contact

Mixing Tools:

  • Graduated syringes or pipettes for precise measurements
  • Mixing beakers or containers
  • Stirring rods or magnetic stirrers

Steps to Make Your Own E-Liquid:

Step 1. Safety First:

  • Ensure you have the necessary safety gear, including gloves and goggles, to protect yourself from contact with nicotine and concentrated flavourings.

Step 2. Nicotine Handling (if used):

  • If you’re using nicotine, take extra care when handling it. Always use gloves and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Nicotine should be stored in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.
  • Measure the desired amount of nicotine using a syringe or pipette and add it to your mixing container.

Step 3. Mixing the Base:

  • Decide on the ratio of PG to VG in your e-liquid. Common ratios are 50/50, 70/30, or 80/20. Measure and mix the PG and VG in your mixing container.

Step 4. Adding Flavour Concentrates:

  • Choose your desired flavour concentrates and add them to the mixture. The specific quantity will depend on your flavour preference and the concentrate’s strength. Refer to recipes or guidelines provided by the concentrate manufacturer.

Step 5. Mixing:

  • Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are well blended. You can use a magnetic stirrer or simply stir manually.

Step 6. Steeping (Optional):

  • Some DIY vapers allow their e-liquids to steep for a period to enhance the flavour. This involves storing the e-liquid in a cool, dark place for several days or weeks, shaking it periodically.

Step 7. Bottling and Labeling:

  • Transfer the e-liquid into bottles or containers, and label them with the flavour, nicotine strength (if applicable), and the date of creation.

 Step 8. Testing:

  • Before vaping, it’s a good idea to test a small amount to ensure you’re satisfied with the flavour and nicotine level.

Step 9. Storage:

  • Store your e-liquids in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture.

Remember that DIY e-liquid mixing requires precision and safety precautions, especially when handling nicotine. It’s crucial to understand the potential risks and take steps to minimise them. Additionally, it’s a good idea to start with established recipes and gradually experiment with your creations as you gain experience.

Making E-Liquids FAQ

How is Vegetable Glycerine (VG) used in e-liquids?

Vegetable glycerine, also called VG, is used when making e-liquids to help in the production of vapour when vaping. A higher mix of VG will result in larger cloud production, and an e-liquid with a lower VG mix will not produce as much vapour.

How is Propylene Glycol (PG) used in e liquids?

When mixing e-liquids, PG is used to dilute the e-liquid mix to make it thinner. As a result, a thinner e-liquid with a higher content of PG will give you less vapour production. PG is also used in e-liquid concentrates as a flavour carrier.

How much e-liquid concentrate should I use?

It all depends on how you like to vape and how strongly you like your flavours when vaping. With concentrates from DIY E-Liquids we recommend using between 10% to 20% concentrate per mix. It also depends very much on the type of e-liquid you are looking to make. A high VG e-liquid will require slightly more concentrate as VG does not carry the same flavour as PG.

How much e-liquid does 30ml concentrate make?

A 30ml concentrate will produce around 120ml – 150ml of e-liquid if mixed at a 20%–25% flavour ratio.

How long do I steep my eliquids for?

Most fruit and menthol flavours tend to be ready to use as soon as you have mixed them, although steeping them for a few days can give you a better and more intense flavour. When you are mixing desert-type flavours steeping for 5-10 days can greatly increase the flavour and help bring out all the layers of flavour when vaping.

How much money can I save making my own e-liquids?

You will save a considerable amount of money compared to buying branded e-liquids.

Average cost of making DIY e-liquids.

  • 10ml, approx. £0.3
  • 50ml approx. £0.5
  • 100ml approx. £0.9

As you can see, you can save a small fortune making your own juices, so why not give it a go?

How do e-liquid concentrates differ from pre-mixed e-liquids?

E-liquid concentrates are highly concentrated flavours that are made with a 100% propylene glycol base. E-liquid concentrates are mixed with vegetable glycerine and nicotine to produce pre-mixed e-liquids (vape juices). You can’t vape concentrates without mixing them with VG. Pre-mixed e-liquids have been pre-mixed with VG/PG and nicotine, so they are ready to vape straight out of the bottle.

Are there any safety considerations or precautions when handling e-liquid concentrates?

E-liquid concentrates are safe to handle, but as a precaution, it is advisable to wear gloves and even eye protection if you are working with nicotine in your mixes.

How long can e-liquid concentrates be stored, and what is their shelf life?

E-liquids can last up to 2 years once opened. To prolong their shelf life, it is recommended to store them in a cool, dark place out of the sun.

Can e-liquid concentrates be combined to create unique flavour combinations?

Yes, that’s the best part of mixing your own e-liquids; you can mix any combination of flavours you can think of. The choices and combinations are endless; customise your own vape juice exactly how you like it.
